Huntsman's Whip

A whip with the inscription “Tom Firr from Lady Florence Dixie, November 1878”.  This whip was given to one of Leicestershire’s most well known professional huntsmen who became a local worthy including director of the Gas Works, the Village Hall and a Poor Law Guardian. Tom Firr hunted with the Quorn hunt from 1872-1898.  The whip was made using a variety of techniques and materials which include carved horn (handle), silver (feral), braided gut covered stock, leather thong and whipcord lash.

A huntsman cracks a whip to stop the hounds or tell them off (this is called rating).
